Carla Caletti uses art as a language to express the less rational and more mysterious aspects of being human. Drawn to practices of mending and repair, she gathers disparate parts and fragments, creating new forms and associations that exist within their own intrinsic landscape and language.
Her work inherently explores liminal space, interiority, reciprocity, ancestral connections, and animism. Her abstracted figures function as a cross between superheroes and totemic beings—guardians that bridge the seen and unseen, serving as physical manifestations of prayers for care, respect, and protection.
Each piece is made entirely from found and recycled materials. Through the process of hand sewing, she honors the women in her lineage and beyond, who have sewn clothing for themselves and their families across generations, carrying this tradition from the past into the present.
Self-taught artist, Carla Caletti was born and raised in Sonoma County, California and lived over 30 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Solo trips to New Mexico began in 1985 in her '68 Volvo named Lilian. She moved to New Mexico just before Covid and is now based in Santa Fe.
Though Caletti began working later in life as an artist, she has shown her work in commercial and non-profit galleries, created pop-ups, made street art, and curated group exhibitions including, “One World, Many Faiths; Altars by Bay Area Women Artists".
For seventeen years she was a Día de los Muertos installation artist at SOMArts Cultural Center is in San Francisco. Her first solo show was in April of 2024 at Strata Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico
